You’ve probably heard about Lyme Disease, but did you know that infected ticks carry other, sometimes life-threatening diseases, too?
And did you know that these diseases affect pets as well as people?
We know about these diseases from sad experience.
Chris had Ehrlichiosis several years ago. Our friend Heidi’s dog died from complications of Lyme Disease. And Cindy herself had Lyme Disease twice; the second time she was co-infected with Babesiosis.
Avoiding these diseases is tough because the ticks that cause them are so small, almost microscopic. In fact, during part of its life cycle, a female deer tick is the size of the punctuation mark at the end of this sentence. Imagine being able to find such a small critter on a black dog like Chris?
That’s why prevention is key. We created a special Ticks and Tick Disease page on our web site to help. We include links to photos of ticks as well as to the experts at the University of Rhode Island. There’s an important link to a watershed article published in Yankee Magazine last summer. If you read nothing else about tick diseases, read that article. It’s an eye-opener!
Please take a moment to visit Ticks and Tick Diseases. It could help save your pet’s life...or your own.
Until next time,
Mr. Dibs
