We received a heartbreaking email today from a toy poodle owner who needs to give up her 3 year old male toy poodle. Seems the family really doesn’t have the time to give the pet the attention he needs. Fair enough.
But the family would like to recoup some of the money they’ve spent on the dog. In these hard financial times, that’s understandable. But here is the advice I gave:
“While I sympathize with you about the money part of this situation, my instincts tell me that your first interest should be in finding a good home for your toy poodle. You bought your puppy in good faith and it just didn’t work out for whatever reason.
That said, I have several suggestions:
First, I would suggest that you contact your local animal shelter. They probably have people on a waiting list who are looking for a small house dog.
Second, you might also let your veterinarian know that you must give up your pet. Your vet will almost certainly help you find a good home.
If you can find a good home for your toy poodle, that will be the best gift you can give to him and to your family. You will be at peace knowing you did the right thing. As for the money? It’s only money. Your pet’s life is more important.”
If you are in a similar situation and have to give up your pet toy poodle, please follow the advice above. If there is a poodle rescue group in your area (your vet will know), please contact them, as well. Here is a link to the Poodle Rescue of New England for those who live in our area.
Until next time,
Mr. Dibs
